Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education is an important part of The Meadows School curriculum. Outdoor Education compliments the academic curriculum providing experiences that are difficult to simulate within the classroom. Outdoor pursuits, for many, become lifelong activities which promote physical and emotional well-being and provide the necessary relief from the stresses of everyday life. It provides opportunities for developing social and team work skills, while improving self esteem and confidence, and encourages an appreciation of the environment while offering a physical challenge and sense of personal achievement.

The Meadows is registered with the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority and currently provides the following activities; kayaking, open canoeing, skiing, rock climbing, abseiling, hill walking, mountaineering, camp craft, navigational skills and off-road cycling. We ensure that all activities are carried out safely, are fully risk assessed and led by qualified staff. It is possible for the pupils to achieve nationally recognised qualifications and skills awards within these activities that include the Paddlesport Awards, Star Awards and certificates awarded through the AQA Unit Award Scheme.

Our Outdoor Education curriculum is also continued into extra-curricular activities with an evening Climbing Club and the Peak Award group for younger pupils who are then offered the option to continue on to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. As an accredited Award centre we are able to train and assess pupils up to Gold Award.
